The Great Pyramid of Egypt
The Great Pyramid of Egypt Overview The Great Pyramid of Egypt is deemed as one of the Worlds Seven Wonders. For more than 43 centuries, the pyramid was ranked as the tallest structure in the earth. But aside from its magnificence what makes it as a true wonder is how these Pharaohs managed such an enormous feat when there were no engineers and construction equipment to use. As such this will always remain a mystery but for todays managers in order to create something as grandeur as the Egypts pyramid, it will only take proper project management skills to successfully carry out a project. Nowadays, projects are ubiquitous. From the simple objective of political campaign to the complicated tasks of launching a rocket, project management is used everywhere by everybody. With this, it is considered as the driving force in most industries for leaders recognize that they are increasingly managing project-driven organization. They recognize that to be successful, they need to be conversant with and use modern project management techniques. Likewise to partially illustrate the importance of such tools, this paper shall discuss different approaches to project planning and control particularly in managing resources. These techniques as well as its benefits and limitations will be presented through the use of two business cases. Case I: Bojan Ltd. Bojan Ltd. operates in a rent a car industry that caters to other commercial businesses. To further satisfy its customers, the company is in the midst of searching for a supply of its vehicles. As such, the Project Manager (PM) is tasked to outline all the activities addressed to this problem using Project Network Diagram (PND), Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) and Critical Path Method (CPM). To start off the project, the PM listed 18 activities that must be performed to produce the project deliverables. (See Table 1.1) This list also shows the relationship between the project activities and the estimated number of work periods that are needed to complete the individual activities. PND was drawn out of these data and was used to determine the start and finish dates of each task and the entire project. Figure 1.1 shows the PND including the detailed schedule data for each activity shown in Early Start (ES), Early Finish (EF), Latest Start (LS) and Latest Finish (LF). The diagram also presented the critical path wherein the nodes in red represent the critical activities. These activities were identified by subtracting the activitys ES from its LS. If the float is zero then it falls as a critical activity; otherwise the activity has a slack wherein it is allowed to be delayed without affecting the projects total duration. In this project there are six non-critical activities (F, G, J, M, P, R) which totals to eighteen days of float. As shown above, the activities A-B-C-D-E-H-I-K-L-N-O-R make up the critical path and by adding the duration of each activity it shows the shortest time in which a project can be completed. For this project adding the entire critical paths duration (1+1+ 4+5+8 +10+10+6+8+10+12+1), it will take 76 days for its fulfillment. For example if the project will commence on May 3 and assuming that there will be no delays and will be completed using a 5 day working week, the project will be finished on its 16th week specifically on the 23rd of August. If in case non-critical activities are delayed, it will not bring about delay for it has a slack. If the delay is equals or less than its slack, it has a time leeway that can be used without adverse effect on the project time completion. For example a one day interruption occurred during Activity P will have no effect on the projects target end date for only its EF and LS will be affected. (See Table 1.4) This case is also the same if Activity Q is one day delayed and if two day holdup happened during Activity M. Throughout the project, PND was applied since time management is often the main source of conflict and using such tool will help PM to tinker with the relationships between tasks and create alternative solutions to increase productivity, profitability, and the diligence of a project. Moreover other than this function, PND also serves four other purposes (Super Business, n.d.). Case II: Carr Ltd. Carr Ltd. supplies an array of fitness equipment to various health and fitness clubs. However the company wants to expand this offering by diversifying its product and market. In this light, the organization will be undertaking a series of activities to launch hydraulic resistance machines to various school gyms. To manage all these tasks, project integration management will be conducted to coordinate all the project elements throughout its lifecycle. Figure 2.1 illustrates the integrations seven main processes to ensure the projects completion. Project Charter The project charter is an announcement that names the new project, the purpose of the project and the PM (Verzuh, 2005, p. 41). Form 2.1 shows the project charter for this specific project. Preliminary Project Scope Statement The scope statement is a document used to develop and confirm a common understanding of the project scope. As such Form 2.2 describes the work to be accomplished in this project as this will help in preventing project creep the tendency of a project scope to get bigger and bigger (Schwalbe, 2008, p. 149). Project Management Plan The project management plan provides a snapshot of the whole project as it contains all the necessary data for project execution and control. The plan aims to coordinate and integrate all other project management knowledge area. Moreover it is kept flexible in order to adapt to future project changes. The contents of the projects management plans are as follows: Project Overview The project overview contains the basic idea of the project. It gives the project management team a summary of what should and should not be accomplished at the end of the project. Management and Technical Approach This part of the plan consists of various documents on the ways the project will be run through. As such it is divided into four parts and these are management objectives, project controls, risk management and project staffing. Management Objectives identifies the top management views, project priorities and constraints. Through this, the team can concentrate on what must be done and can recognize the probable project limits. Form 2.4 shows the projects management objectives. Form 2.4: Management Objectives Project Controls describes the monitoring of the projects progress and its change management. For this project, the team has decided to conduct a weekly status review to ensure that the project is completed on time as well as to handle the change effectively. Moreover every after the progress meeting, a project status report is to be filled out and if there will be a need for change, a project change request must be first completed before any change implementation. Risk Management identifies the risks and the ways to manage and control perils that will restrain the projects success. Form 2.7 lists the projects risk management techniques that will allow the team to prepare for the risks and on how to react on them. Project Staffing describes the human resource needs of the project. This document identifies the skills required for this project. As such, Form 2.8 provides a list of the qualifications needed for the project to ensure that it will be completed with highly skilled team members. Scope Management The scope management defines the work required to complete the project. This supports the preliminary scope statement for it clarifies and provides more specific details. With this end, a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is created to define the total scope of the project. Although this does not show the tasks dependencies and duration, the WBS provides a basis for planning and managing project schedules, costs, resources and changes (Young, 2007). Project Organization The project organization is represented by the Organizational Breakdown Structure (OBS). An OBS shows the decomposition of the projects responsibilities based on its WBS. Through this, the PM can allocate responsibilities, and to distribute the work fairly and evenly among the team (Young, 2007, p. 132). Project Schedule The project schedule provides a summary of the overall project schedule for it gives a baseline date of the projects completion. As such Table 2.2 identifies the project schedule that will be used to measure the projects progress to ensure the timely finish of the project. The table lists the relationships of each activity, the critical four dates and its critical path that are essential on identifying the projects duration. Project Budget The project budget consists of project estimate and project budget wherein project estimate is the approximate cost of the resources needed to complete a project while project budget involves allocating the overall cost estimate to individual work items to establish a baseline for measuring performance. For this project in estimating its total cost, bottom-up estimate was done. Bottom-up estimate which is often called Activity Based Costing involves on estimating individual work items and summing them to get a project total (Schwalbe, 2008, p. 274). In this project, labor cost, production of promotional tools and the school presentation consume most of the budget. Form 2.9 provides a summary of the projects estimated cost. Project Execution Project execution is the stage of performing the actual work as approved in the plan. This phase probably takes 90 percent or more of the projects effort. As such, the activities identified on the WBS are now being implemented to produce the project deliverables (Verzuh, 2005, p. 38). (Refer Figure 2.2 for the projects WBS) Consequently this point of project lifecycle involves on managing and performing the work described in the project management plan and so as to ensure that the project will be undertaken accordingly, the PM must perform these three tasks: Coordinating planning and execution; Providing strong leadership and a supportive culture; and Capitalizing on product, business and application area knowledge. Project Monitoring and Controlling Project monitoring and controlling involves collecting, measuring and disseminating performance information. In this stage project status reports play a pivotal role wherein all the activities are being tracked to measure the overall health of the project. Seven criteria are used for effective tracking and these are: Work (is it to estimates (both time and cost)?; Measurement (is everyone clear how to measure progress?); Timescales (are work plans being completed on schedule?); Quality (are standards being met in accordance with specifications?); Teamwork (are responsibilities being adhered to?); Changes (are problem-solving tools being used effectively?); Stakeholders (are they being kept informed, consulted and involved?) (Young, 2007, p.211). In addition to this, since scope, schedule and cost comprise the success criteria for the project, these three are the primary focus on monitoring the projects progress. Table 2.4 lists various methods on monitoring these factors. The purpose of tracking the projects progress is to ensure that the team always have the information to make an accurate assessment of what has happened and compare it with what should have happen according to the plan. Through this comparison, the team can take corrective actions to such variance. For example, it was identified that the project is lagging behind, specifically in doing the marketing plan due to conflicting ideas. As such, various proposals were raised and one of these is to work overtime. With this corrective action, the impending effect on project schedule was countered. Figure 2.3 summarizes the monitoring and controlling system for this project. Integrated Change Control Integrated change control is a management process for requesting, reviewing, approving, carrying out and controlling changes to the projects deliverables (Wallace 2007). Using the Project Change Request Form (Form 2.6) the project can achieve an efficient change control through understanding the source requiring the change, identifying the pros and cons of adapting to the change and preparing plan in implementing the change. With this end, Figure 2.4 illustrates the projects change control process (Westland, 2003). After recognizing the need for change, Configuration Management is then implemented. Configuration management controls the different versions of the project. It focuses specifically on how to implement approved changes as it keeps everyone in the project reading from the same sheet of music. For example, if the product proposal was changed midway through the project. This should be communicated to all the team members through updating the project reports so that the sub-teams responsible for the other parts of the marketing plan can make adjustments. If this is failed to do so, this will lead to confusing marketing plan. As such if the product package is targeting the low-end schools but the pricing suggests a premium rate for the fitness equipment, this results to inconsistencies. To avoid this kind of scenario, they must perform this three configuration management step: Identify the items that will be controlled, set up the control structure, and assign responsibility for control ( Verzuh, 2005, p.302). Project Closure Project closure is the smallest phase of the project but no less than important than the others. This stage is signified by all tasks and specific deliverables, documentation manuals and process procedures are finished and to identify if the project is finally completed Table 2.5 lists a closure checklist. When the project is deemed as completed, a close-out meeting is conducted to culminate all the efforts of the team member. The purpose of this meeting is to reach an agreement with the sponsor, in this case with Carr Ltd, to formally close the project. As such, Form 2.10 shows a sample of close-out meeting agenda. However the close-out meeting is not yet the end of the project for final report are yet to be done. This report includes project evaluation and project appraisal. Project evaluation is used to review the project processes and the management of the project. There are two modes of evaluating the project; active evaluation is conducted when the project is still in the works while post-project evaluation is after the projects turnover to the sponsor. On the other hand, project appraisal assesses the project as a whole for it determines the gains and losses of the project. These assessments are done with the purpose to learn from experience and to improve future projects. In addition to this in every project undertaken, benefits are always expected on them. In some cases, benefits are achieved after sometime the project has been concluded. In this project however, the benefit has been realized even before the project closure. Carr Ltd gained a new income stream in this diversification project via the agreed upon contracts with the customers (schools) for it signifies the payment terms (tangible benefits). Conclusion Project in tegration management is often regarded as the key to overall project success for it ties together all areas of project management. Thus this holds the primary focus of a PM. Summary Project management has come a long way since the formation of the pyramids in Egypt. Nowadays organizations have a renewed interest on this specific field as the number of projects continues to grow and their complexity continues to increase. This can be majorly attributed to the rise of modern project management tools and techniques for projects differ from the ongoing operations of a firm, managing those presents a new set of challenges. With this it resulted to developing tools and techniques that will deal with these challenges (Verzuh, 2005, p. 1). Accordingly throughout the paper, it presented various project management techniques. In the first case of Bojan Ltd, the use of network diagram was illustrated to stress the importance of completing the project on time. On the other hand, Carr Ltds problem of managing its new initiative was resolved by the project management integration that aims to ensure that all project elements come together at the right time to complete the project successfully. As such, the use of these tools emphasized that project management is a valued skill set in organizations across the spectrum. References Books Schwalbe, K., 2008. Kinko`s Copier Store Essay
1.) The general operational standards can be developed and implemented in all or in a majority of Kinko`s shops. In fact, general operational standards are guidelines and directions for defined activities, which Kinko`s employees have to meet and provide during printing operations. It helps be sure in the productââ¬â¢s quality, which Kinko produces for their customers. Kinko`s is service-oriented company, it has lower degree of labor intensity and higher degree of customer interaction and customization. For printing shops in the customization process of products the major role plays specially standardized step by steps procedures for high-tech specialized equipment and machinary, standardized materials and perfectly providing service operators. 2.) The copiers in machine center should be grouped and sort according to their specific tasks, functions and specialization. For instance, copier-duplexing and copier-duplicators are large machines that combine both functions copying and duplicating and also contains feature to be printed on both sides. In fact, printing functions quite similar, such machines need close or combined printing area and qualified operators. Moreover, Kinko`s Copier Stores should increase the level of self service by introducing convenience copiers outside of store or inside near with entrance in many locations through building. Indeed, the basic activities customers can make themselves. Moreover, Kinko`s Copier Stores should implement special sector for automatic feed and automatic staplers, which will be located near with major printing machines. In fact, close location of cross-functional items will decrease avarege waiting time per customer, increase the service level and decrease labor costs. 3.) Kinko offer binds, folds, staples, collates, makes pads and take passport photos. All the machines and personnel deliberately displays in one big room. Also, Kinko provide private copying and copying service. Private copying like ââ¬Å"professor publishingâ⬠provided by company takes lot of working ours. And major problem here is that while working on that order, they will not be able to service all other regular customer. However, Copying service itself has it is own problems related with room where all services provided. People are always peering back to the audience and maybe afraid that someone will see what they copy. So it is inconvenient to have all machines in one place. Kinkoââ¬â¢s managers has a case when one women insisted that manager throw away the ribbon on the self- service typewriter sheââ¬â¢d just used, fearing that someone might try to use it to re-create her document. It obvious that is costly to the company to throw ribbon after every customer. Tha t is one of example of one more problem that company faced. 4.) We assume that maybe this type of copyright was illegal. Hence, ââ¬Å"professor publishingâ⬠is a service that lets professors excerpt chapters from several books and print them up together as a single textbook. Or as Kinkoââ¬â¢s says it is one of the most scrupulous of the copy chains and takes lot of time, office works virtually around-the-clock on this order. So as result, maybe they will generate more profit spending time on regular orders than spent ours only on one.

The Berlin Wall The Cold War - 1506 Words
The Berlin Wall: The Cold Warââ¬â¢s Symbol European history has always interested me and one of the events we covered in my World Cultures history class was the Berlin Wall. I wanted to spend more time on the topic because I love all history and it interested me. I am sure we learned a little more than what I remember of the Wall but I know is the basic facts. We glazed over it and pretty much just acknowledged its past existence then moved on. We recalled it was in Germany and was a result of many previous and ongoing conflicts of the time. One night I was watching a documentary on the eighties by CNN and they quickly mentioned the Berlin Wall being knocked down. It brought this time period of history back to my attention. I wanted to read about on my own time but I did not. Having an English paper be about this captivating event helps me find the time. This time period was very risky and countries had their set allies and enemies. Even a country has their own sides (West and East Germany). Everyone had a side, a view point. These countries helped each other by setting up bases in countries close to the enemy or sending supplies to help their war buddies out. NATO, Arab Union, Organization of African Unity, League of Nations/ the United Nations and the European Union were becoming common and most becoming large power players in economic and political situations. All countries wanted a large spot in these organizations to have more influence and power. This provides the final step in the treatment process. Process flow - step 6 Chlorination/dechlorination Chlorine is added to the effluent to disinfect any remaining microbiological pathogens; this takes at least half an hour. The effluent is then treated with sulphur dioxide gas to remove excess chlorine, which would be harmful to the river ecosystem. The effluent is then ready for discharge into the river. Process flow - step 7 Solids separation and incineration The sludge and scum, removed in step 2 of the process, are dealt with separately. The sludge is stored in a sludge holding tank where it is then pumped to the centrifuge at a controlled rate. Polymers are added to the sludge to aid in the thickening of the sludge during this process. Water is separated from the sludge by spinning in a centrifuge to form a thick, muddy substance known as cake, a process known as dewatering. The cake is then conveyed to the furnace where it is incinerated at 750-1000à °C to produce Agri-Ash. The scum, however, is stored in a heated tank to thicken it prior to its transfer to the furnace, where it is also incinerated. Approximately 700,000 litres of sludge is treated each day to produce 47 tonnes of dewatered solids. After

Reflective Journal for Simulation & Gaming- myassignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about theReflective Journal for Simulation Gaming. Answer: Non-verbal communication: Describe: Non verbal communication is a way of communicating between the two persons using non-verbal clues. Non verbal communication is effective in some ways, and sometimes becomes more effective than verbal communication (Walther et al.,2015). We all have used non verbal communication for some reasons, knowingly and unknowingly. I have used non verbal communication in the classes, like, during a lecture if I need a pen or a pencil from my classmate, I used non verbal communication to ask him or her for that. Sometimes non verbal communication becomes one way like someones gesture can indicates about the thinking of that person. Interpret: For me, the non verbal communication happens most with my friends. I think, the understanding of the non verbal communication depends on the understanding between the persons. I have witnessed that my close friends can interpret my communication through the non-verbal communication more clearly, rather than my friends, who are not that close. Though it is an informal way of communication, sometimes the communication between students like us and the professors also become non-verbal. Evaluate: I think the flow of the communication is faster in the non-verbal communication. The thoughts of a person are passed to another person through some gesture or facial expressions. Depending on the understanding between the two people, the non-verbal communication can be effective. However, I think it should not be used as a way of communication in every situation (Cuddy et al.,2015). The compactness of the formal way of communication is not present in the non-verbal communication. Plan: In future the non-verbal communication can play a vital role. We all have used non-verbal communication as a way to communicate with each other. However, I try not use the non-verbal way of communication with those persons who are not well known to me, because I think misunderstanding may occur in this case. However, the persons I know may able to understand my saying through the non verbal communication, so I generally use this way of communication with them. McGregors Theory X and Theory Y: Describe: McGregors Theory X and Theory Y consist of two different concepts of managers believe regarding the motivation of the workers. Theory X is considered as the old school of management where it is believed that the workers are not interested to take responsibilities and routine observations on the workers are needed to be done in order to make them work properly. Theory Y deals with the concepts from the new school of management where it is stated that doing work is natural for the workers and the workers can be motivated by the appreciation of their work and certain rewards and recognitions for their work. I think motivating people depends on the professional background of that person. A fresher can get motivated by appreciation for his work and constant encouragement from seniors, opportunity for promotion. In case of working professionals the motivation factors can be hike in the salary and going for more responsible position. Interpret: The experience of being a student in the college or university is totally different from working as a professional in an organization (Dharejo, Baloch Jhatial, 2017). I feel, in the college the only responsibility is to understand the subjects and doing well in the exams. The consequences of doing well in the exam are good, but we do not think about those consequences much as a student. Working in a company, imposes certain responsibility on the worker, and the consequences of those responsibilities have certain higher level impacts on the organization. Evaluate: I have the experience of being a student in the university and also working in an organization. I felt the difference between the degrees of responsibility that has to be taken in the both place. I was appreciated by my co-workers for my work, which motivated me to do better in the workplace. I made mistakes, but in that case my seniors helped me to do the work correctly. In case, if the organization imposed a strict rule on me and penalized me for my mistakes, I might not be interested to do my job properly. I think, in university also, the impact of applying theory Y is good. In case if my good marks are appreciated by my teachers and my classmates I will be more encouraged to learn the lessons more properly. Plan The application of the new school principal of motivation is more desirable, but I have seen in some cases strictness plays an important role in order to manage the workers. It can be said that theory X, the old school principals are not meant for the motivation, but is more inclined towards managing the people. In an organized company, in future, some kind of conflicts can happen in that case managing the workers become important. The future of the Mcgregors theory cannot survive individually only on one theory (Aithal Kumar, 2016). It is better that if a new theory can derive, from merging these two theories. Self Directed Team Work: Describe: Self Directed team work indicates a group of employees acquiring different skills, aims to work together in order to achieve the organizational goals (Phillips, Parker Rushmer, 2017). I have worked in such team in my academic life. I did not work with self directed team in my professional life. I have gained certain experience in my college life while working with this kind of team on certain projects; from my experience I have learnt that self directed team sometimes becomes more effective than the conventional team management (Hoffman, 2017). The main difference between a self directed team and the conventional team is that, in conventional team there is a leader to lead the team but in a self directed team there is no leader and the members of the team gained certain knowledge. The team is very diverse in that sense. Interpret: I have done some projects in my college days, and the team I was working was self directed in nature. We, the members of the team had knowledge domain on the different areas and the main objective of our team was that to implement all our domain knowledge successfully in that certain project. There was no one to lead our team, but we were stick to our objectives and this helped us to achieve the success in the project (Schreuder,Schalk de Jong, 2017). The absence of the primary attributes of the conventional team worked for us and we enjoyed working in a team, with no leaders and flexible working condition. Evaluate: We did not have any team leader in our team; the driven force of our team was the thought of the success of our project. The working time was also flexible. All these factors did have positive impacts of the team (Bourdeau et al.,2017). As , there was no hierarchy in our team, w e, the members of our team can communicate with each other in informal ways which had helped us to understand the requirements of the project properly and had positive attributes on the success of the project. Plan: Self directed team is successful is some cases depending on the situation. The organization needs to motivate the employees so that they can work in a team without any supervision to achieve the organizational goal. In our case, all of the members of our team were wanted to gain the success in the project. Setting of one goal for all the members of the team worked for us. However, self directed team may not work, if the member of the team do not share a comfortable working environment and the members are not motivated enough by the company or the organization to achieve the goal. Human Skills: Describe: Human skill is the ability to work and cooperate with the people in a positive and effective way. Human skill is important for both the managers and the employees as it helps them to maintain good working environment and the flow of work (Daniau, 2016). I think, human skill is applicable in both academic life and professional life. In my college I maintained good friendship with my classmate and I tried to listen to my teachers properly. In some cases, the conflict arose, then I tried to resolve that issues through a good and transparent communication. `The same thing happened from my teacher`s and my classmates side. Interpret: I have seen that the good communication skill helps to achieve the good human skill. I have tried to maintain the ethics in both the workplace and the office and have tried to maintain a good terms with both my classmates and the teachers (Divleli Ergun,2015). The teachers are also very approachable to us and that can be considered as a good human skill as we, the students can clear our doubts from them without any hesitation or can feel free to discuss any problem that is bothering us. Maintaining good terms with my classmates helps me to create special bonding with them. We have enjoyed our journey of gaining the knowledge as well as we have helped each other when it is needed. Evaluate: Good human skill can solve many complex problems and I have already experienced this. In this case, it can be definitely advisable that for maintaining the good working culture and the organizational growth, managers are needed to maintain good relationship with the employees. Human skill also includes managing the people. The good human skill is helpful to identify the problems, employees are facing and also solving of those problems. Plan: In future human skill is going to play an important role in all the fields of studies and the industries. Like, I have faced many problems in my college but those were solved by my teachers and it was the result of the good human skill maintained by them and also maintained from my side. The overall impact is good human skill has positive impact on both the organizations and its members. References Aithal, P. S., Kumar, P. M. (2016).
